UNDERSTANDING THE COST OF A PUREBRED KITTEN
The Difference Between Shelter Adoption and Responsible Breeding At Shore Kittens, we believe every cat deserves a safe, loving home, whether that cat comes from an animal shelter, a rescue organization, or a responsible breeder. We have tremendous respect for animal shelters and rescue organizations and the important work they do to care for animals in need. However, we occasionally receive questions about why our Persian and Himalayan kittens have a higher cost than what may be available through shelters at lesser cost. We believe it is important to explain the differences between these organizations, how animal care is funded, and the investment involved in raising purebred kittens responsibly. Are Shelter Animals Really Free Or Low Cost? Although some animal shelters occasionally offer free or reduced-fee adoptions, caring for those animals is never without expense. Every animal requires food, shelter, veterinary care, cleaning supplies, utilities, and daily attention. Many shelters also employ veterinarians, veterinary technicians, animal caretakers, administrative personnel, and maintenance staff. These expenses must be paid regardless of whether an adoption fee is collected. Depending on how a shelter operates, funding may come from: ● Municipal or county budgets supported by taxpayers ● Government contracts for animal control and sheltering services ● Private donations and charitable contributions ● Grants and fundraising activities ● Adoption fees ● Corporate sponsorships and community partnerships Government-operated shelters may receive substantial public funding, while privately operated nonprofit shelters often rely on donations, adoption fees, fundraising, and other sources of financial support. Some nonprofit shelters also receive public funding through municipal contracts. When a shelter waives an adoption fee, the cost of caring for that animal does not disappear. Those expenses are simply covered through other financial resources. We wholeheartedly support shelter adoption and encourage families to consider this wonderful option when choosing a new companion. Why Are Persian and Himalayan Kittens Different? Persian and Himalayan cats are beloved for their beautiful coats, affectionate personalities, gentle temperaments, and distinctive appearances. Although Persian and Himalayan cats occasionally become available through animal shelters and breed-specific rescue organizations, they are generally much less common than domestic mixed-breed cats. Young, purebred Persian and Himalayan kittens with documented pedigrees are particularly uncommon in traditional shelters. Families seeking these breeds often have specific preferences regarding appearance, coat color, temperament, pedigree, and early socialization. A responsible breeding program allows families to select a kitten raised with attention to these characteristics while benefiting from the care and experience of a breeder familiar with the breed. Choosing to adopt from a shelter and choosing to purchase a responsibly raised purebred kitten are both valid decisions. The best choice depends on each family’s preferences, expectations, and circumstances. What Goes Into Raising a Shore Kittens Kitten? Raising Persian and Himalayan kittens responsibly involves considerably more than providing food and a comfortable place to sleep. Our commitment begins long before a kitten is born and continues throughout its earliest stages of life. Health and Veterinary Care Maintaining a healthy breeding program requires ongoing attention to feline health and wellness. We invest in appropriate health screening, preventive care, veterinary services, and the supplies necessary to maintain the well-being of our cats and kittens. Unexpected medical expenses can also arise, making it essential to maintain the resources necessary to provide appropriate care whenever needed. Nutrition and Daily Care Proper nutrition is essential for growing kittens and adult breeding cats. We provide food appropriate for their different life stages, along with litter, bedding, grooming supplies, cleaning products, and other daily necessities. These expenses continue throughout the year, regardless of whether kittens are currently available for adoption. Socialization and Early Development One of the most important aspects of our breeding program is the time and attention devoted to each kitten. Our kittens are raised in a home environment where they receive regular human interaction, affection, and opportunities for socialization. They are handled by adults and children, helping them become comfortable with everyday family life. We also introduce appropriate scratching surfaces and begin establishing healthy scratching habits before our kittens leave for their new homes. Our kittens typically remain with us until approximately 11 to 12 weeks of age, allowing additional time for social, behavioral, and physical development. We believe these early experiences play an important role in helping kittens adjust successfully to their new families. Grooming and Coat Maintenance Persian and Himalayan cats require specialized grooming because of their beautiful, long coats. Our daily care includes brushing, combing, eye-area hygiene, and gradually introducing kittens to routine grooming. We invest in appropriate grooming products and equipment to help maintain their comfort and coat health. Housing, Utilities, and Maintenance Maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for our cats and kittens is another significant responsibility. Our operating expenses include heating, air conditioning, electricity, water, sanitation, laundry, equipment, and the ongoing maintenance of our cats’ living spaces. These expenses are ongoing and are not limited to the weeks when kittens are available. The Value of Time, Experience, and Dedication Beyond the direct financial expenses, responsible breeding requires an extraordinary commitment of time. Our cats and kittens need care every single day, including weekends, holidays, and overnight hours. Expectant mothers and newborn kittens may require additional observation, assistance, and attention around the clock. There are no guaranteed days off when caring for living animals. Our breeding program reflects years of experience, continuing education, and a commitment to providing the best possible environment for our cats and kittens. The purchase price of a kitten helps support not only its individual care but also the continued operation of a responsible breeding program. Unlike government-operated shelters, Shore Kittens does not receive taxpayer funding or municipal contracts to cover our operating expenses. Our breeding program is privately funded, and we are responsible for the costs associated with caring for our cats and kittens. Why We Do Not Offer Free Kittens We understand that welcoming a new pet into your home is a significant financial decision. However, raising Persian and Himalayan kittens responsibly requires substantial financial resources, time, and dedication. Our kitten prices reflect the investment necessary to maintain our breeding program and provide consistent, quality care. Providing kittens without charge would not eliminate the expenses associated with raising them. Those expenses would still need to be covered. Our responsibility also extends beyond placing kittens in loving homes. We must maintain the resources necessary to provide appropriate care for every cat in our breeding program. For these reasons, we do not routinely offer kittens free of charge. Our pricing allows us to continue doing what we love while maintaining the standards of care our cats and kittens deserve. Shelter Adoption and Responsible Breeding Both Have Their Place We believe there is room for both animal rescue and responsible breeding. Shelters and rescues provide invaluable services by caring for animals in need and helping them find loving homes. Responsible breeders serve families seeking particular breeds while maintaining breeding programs focused on health, temperament, socialization, and breed characteristics. Neither choice diminishes the importance of the other. If your primary goal is to welcome a loving companion into your home at a lower initial cost, we encourage you to explore your local shelters and rescue organizations. If your heart is set on a Persian or Himalayan kitten, we would be delighted to help you learn more about our breeding program and the kittens we raise. Regardless of where your future companion comes from, we encourage every prospective pet owner to consider the lifelong responsibilities of pet ownership. Food, veterinary care, grooming, and other essential expenses continue long after the initial adoption or purchase. Every cat deserves a home where its needs can be met throughout its lifetime. Our Commitment at Shore Kittens We take great pride in the care, love, and attention we provide to our Persian and Himalayan cats and kittens. Our goal is not simply to place kittens in homes. It is to raise healthy, confident, affectionate companions who will become cherished members of their new families. We appreciate the families who recognize the dedication, responsibility, and financial commitment involved in raising purebred kittens. Thank you for considering Shore Kittens and for taking the time to understand the care behind every kitten we raise. Shore Kittens Born at the Shore, Loved Everywhere.
